The Government has released the first ever Socio-Economic and Caste Census. According to the census, one out of three families living in villages is landless and depends on manual labour for their livelihood. There are a total of 24.39 crore households in the country, of which 17.91 crore live in villages. Of these, 10.69 crore households are considered deprived. The deprivation data reveals that 5.37 crores or 29.97 percent households in rural areas are landless deriving a major part of their income from manual labour.
About 30 per cent of rural households belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe(ST) group. As per the census, 29.43 per cent of the households belong to the SC and ST category across the country.
The census, which was released by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi yesterday, also showed that over one-third of the population living in rural areas is illiterate. Mr Jaitley said, the document will be essential for policy makers both at the Centre and state level and will form the basis for helping the government target groups for support in terms of policy planning.
"This document will form a basis of helping us to target groups for support in terms of policy planning. I am sure it will be a wonderful document and give us an opportunity to measure the progress which households in India will create, who are the ones, who have qualitatively moved up in terms of quality of life and which are the ones both in terms of geographical regions socio groupings, which in future planning needs to be targeted."
Speaking on the occasion, Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birendra Singh said the data addresses the multi dimensionality of poverty and provides an opportunity for evidence based planning with a Gram Panchayat as the unit.
"Idea is to deal with all the aspects of poverty of the families simultaneously, be it food, housing, shops, education and skills , socio groupings or giving to poor boys and the village or the panchayat."
The Government, however refrained from releasing the caste-based data in the Census.

The Supreme Court has said that 35 crew members of a vessel owned by a US firm, arrested in 2013 for allegedly carrying a huge cache of weapons illegally on board, will be prosecuted under the Arms Act.
"The apex court said this while setting aside an order of the Madras High Court which had quashed the charges under the provisions of the Arms Act. A bench of justices Vikramajit Sen and Abhay Manohar Sapre noted that the high court's observations were wholly unwarranted and cannot be upheld. The bench also directed the lower court in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu to complete the trial in the case within six months from the date of receipt of the copy of its judgment.THIS IS PATRICIA FOR NEWS DESK."

The Supreme Court has refused to cancel the bail granted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court to Telangana TDP MLA A. Revanth Reddy, the prime accused in a cash for vote case. A bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu dismissed the plea of the Telangana government’s Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) seeking cancellation of the bail to Mr. Reddy and two co-accused, Bishop Harry Sebastian and R. Uday Simha.
Earlier, the special court for ACB cases had rejected the bail pleas of Mr.Reddy and the two others.

The government has said that Indians against whom information has been received from foreign nations on overseas accounts or assets won't be eligible to use the compliance window to make voluntary disclosures under the stringent new black money law. The Finance Ministry has said it will also not be available for persons against whom any information has been received from foreign nations on or before the 30th of June.
The three categories of persons barred from availing the compliance window ending September 30 include foreign account holders .They will not get immunity from the 120 per cent tax and penalty and upto 10 year jail term prescribed in the new law.
The benefit will not also accrue to those availing benefits under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements and Tax Information and Exchange Agreements with foreign countries and jurisdictions. The disclosures made in the 90-day compliance window would attract 30 per cent tax and an equivalent amount of penalty, while escaping criminal prosecution and jail term.

The Government will soon implement an ambitious policy under which one per cent of the road construction cost of highways will go towards planting trees along the highways. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said yesterday this will help transform India's 90,000 kms of national highways into green corridors. He said, the government plans to rope in 1,000 contractors, who will have their own nurseries and will plant new trees and create a green area on the National Highways. Speaking on the sidelines of programme on waste management in New Delhi Mr Gadkari said, planting trees in any particular area will depend on the soil suitability there, beside the climate and success stories. He said, the new green policy will enable creation of employment as well as contribute towards the economic growth of the country.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission has issued show-cause notices to as many as 19 registered political parties for failing to submit their annual financial audits and statements of income tax returns. As per rules, a political party is expected to submit the documents to the election commission by the 30th of June. Prominent among these parties are RPI (A) led by Ramdas Athawale, Peasants and Workers Party, Swabhimani Paksha, Lokbharati party and Jan Surajya Shakti party.

In Assam, National Investigation Agency (NIA) yesterday filed its first charge sheet naming ten accused in the massacre of over 80 Adivashi villagers in a string of attacks by the Sangbijit faction of the NDFB. The charge sheet was filed before the Special NIA court in Guwahati. Our correspondent reports that the case pertains to the NDFB (S) attack on innocent people of Pakriguri village under Serfanguri Police Station in Kokrajhar district.

Responding to a question on India's vote on a resolution in the Human Rights Council yesterday, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, the resolution had reference to the International Criminal Court (ICC). He said, New Delhi’s general approach has been to abstain, whenever a Human Rights Council resolution made a direct reference to the ICC, as had happened in the resolutions on Syria and North Korea.
"India abstained from a vote against Israel on the resolution which had welcomed the UN Human Rights Council report. The report had found evidence of alleged war crimes committed by both Israel and Hamas during the Gaza conflict in 2014, particularly calling for accountability of Israeli officials. India was one of five countries including Kenya and Macedonia that abstained from voting on the resolution. In Jammu & Kashmir, the death toll in the ongoing operation in North Kashmir’s Uri sector in Baramulla district has reached two. One soldier and an armed infiltrator were killed when the Army foiled an infiltration bid in the LoC area yesterday. An army spokesman in Srinagar told AIR that the injured army soldier succumbed to his injuries late last night. Yesterday, the army foiled an infiltration bid along Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district killing one infiltrator and injuring another. Our correspondent reporst that an encounter broke out early yesterday after the army detected a group of insurgents who tried to sneak into this side of the Line of Control in Boniyar area.

Chief Electoral Officer of the State, JS Saharia said that candidates in civic elections can fill forms online and make corrections, if any, through a special software uploaded on the commission's website.
